A private Indian bank swapped its Oracle databases for PostgreSQL and did not announce it. Migrations like this are not product launches, they are infrastructure, and by 2026 most large Indian enterprises have done at least one. The reasons keep coming up in the same order.
Cost is the entry point
A commercial database licence renewal runs into crores at scale, and per-core pricing climbs every few years. PostgreSQL is free to license, and that gap alone justifies the planning cost. But the real savings show up elsewhere. Commercial licences bundle features you never touch. Open source lets a team run exactly the stack it needs, on commodity hardware or whatever cloud it already has.
Avoiding vendor lock-in
A proprietary database's file format and undocumented behaviour tie you to the vendor's roadmap, pricing, and support timeline. Open formats and standard SQL mean another vendor, or your own team, can take over. Indian enterprises learned this the hard way with ERPs and core banking platforms where the exit cost had become higher than the software itself.
Security and auditability
Open source is not automatically secure, but you can actually check. Enterprise teams review the diff on a security release, run their own scans, and see precisely what runs in production. For a bank answering to the RBI, knowing what the core database does matters more than any vendor certification. Source visibility also makes compliance audits easier, since you can point at code instead of trusting a document.
Control over the roadmap
A vendor can deprecate a feature you depend on and simply stop supporting it. With open source you can fork, patch, or hire someone to maintain what you need. Most companies never actually fork, but the option alone changes the negotiation. Vendors of open source software know you can leave, so pricing stays closer to reality.
Talent and the ecosystem
A junior developer in India is far more likely to have run PostgreSQL or Kubernetes than Oracle WebLogic. Recruiting for open source skills is easier, the learning material is free, and the pool includes people who trained on the exact stack you run. The ecosystem compounds this. Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Grafana are the default stack for running and observing modern workloads, and the community ships tools faster than any single vendor could.
The Indian example nobody announced
IRCTC is the clearest case. Its ticketing site absorbs booking spikes that break most architectures, and it moved off a proprietary stack years ago, partly for cost and partly for scale. The same reasoning sits behind public sector moves to open source office software and behind nearly every Indian fintech running Kubernetes and PostgreSQL. The argument is identical at every size: the licence was the cheapest part, and removing it exposed the real cost, which is engineering.
The honest counterpoint
Open source is not free. You pay in people. The DBA team that used to call Oracle support now owns the PostgreSQL upgrade, the failure, and the tuning. Hosting, backups, monitoring, and security patching all land on your plate. That is why the mature adoption pattern is managed: a bank rarely runs its own Kubernetes distribution, it buys a managed service and keeps the flexibility. The licence cost disappears, the operations cost does not, and companies that plan for that are the ones where the switch sticks.
