Most Indian startups run builds on whatever CI the git hosting platform gives them. That works until the queue grows or the bill does. When you outgrow that, the open source layer of the DevOps stack is surprisingly complete: self-hosted git hosting, runners, config management, and observability all have solid options. The caveat is that the licensing landscape shifted in the last few years, so a tool that used to be MIT might now be source-available or AGPL.
GitLab CE: the all-in-one self-hosted platform
GitLab Community Edition (MIT) is the most complete self-hosted package: git hosting, MRs, built-in CI, container registry, and dashboards in one install. The reason teams choose it is that the CI runs on your own runners, so build minutes stop being a metered cost. The tradeoff: it is heavy. A small instance needs 8GB of RAM to feel comfortable, and upgrades between major versions can be tedious. GitLab also stopped releasing some new features under the CE license, so the product has an open core shape now.
Jenkins: old, ugly, and everywhere
Jenkins (MIT) has been around for twenty years and it shows. The UI is dated, and configuration often ends up as a pile of plugins and Groovy scripts that nobody fully understands. But it is still the most flexible automation engine that exists, and almost every legacy build system in a bank or a large enterprise runs on it. If your job expects Jenkins, learn it even if you would rather not run it yourself.
GitHub Actions: great, but not self-hosted open source
GitHub Actions is free on the hosted tier for public repos and small private ones, and it is genuinely good. It is also not open source in the same way the other tools here are: the engine runs on GitHub's infrastructure, and while the workflow YAML is open, the product is proprietary. Fine to use, but you do not own the pipeline. If you want the same feel with ownership, look at Gitea or Forgejo with their native Actions support.
Gitea and Forgejo: git hosting plus CI in one binary
Gitea (MIT) and its fork Forgejo (MIT) are lightweight, self-hosted git servers that run in a single binary with a small footprint. Both now support GitHub Actions-compatible workflows, so you can get a decent CI without standing up a separate runner cluster. A 2GB VPS handles a small team comfortably. This is usually where self-hosters land between GitLab's weight and plain GitHub.
Drone and Woodpecker CI: container-native pipelines
Drone (Apache-2.0) builds each step as a Docker container, which keeps pipelines clean and cacheable. It was the go-to for years, but development slowed after Harness took over, and the community forked it into Woodpecker CI (Apache-2.0). For simple YAML pipelines where every step is a container, either works; Woodpecker has the momentum now and an easy migration path from Drone.
Ansible: config management without agents
Ansible (GPL-3.0) manages servers over SSH without installing agents, which makes it the fastest way to script a homelab or a production fleet. Playbooks are YAML, so the barrier is low, but that same simplicity bites you: complex Ansible setups get slow and hard to debug, and there is no built-in state tracking beyond what you write. For reproducible deploys across a handful of servers it remains the pragmatic default.
Terraform, and why OpenTofu exists
Terraform (MPL-2.0) is still the most common infrastructure-as-code tool. HashiCorp switched it to the Business Source License (BSL) in 2023, which forbids competing with their paid offering, so Terraform is now source-available rather than open source. The community forked it into OpenTofu (MPL-2.0), which tracks the same providers. If you are starting fresh and open source purity matters, start with OpenTofu; if you already run Terraform, the practical difference for daily use is small.
Argo CD: GitOps for Kubernetes
Argo CD (Apache-2.0) is the standard GitOps controller: your cluster state lives in git, and Argo keeps the cluster in sync with it. Rollbacks become reverting a commit, which is a real quality-of-life improvement. It is only worth the complexity if you actually run Kubernetes. On a plain VM stack, it solves a problem you do not have.
Prometheus and Grafana: the observability baseline
Prometheus (Apache-2.0) scrapes metrics and stores them with a powerful query language, and Grafana (AGPL-3.0, since its move from Apache in 2021) turns them into dashboards. Together they are the de facto open source monitoring stack. The cost is maintenance: storage grows, rules accumulate, and dashboards drift. Grafana's AGPL license also means you should treat it like a real dependency, because what you ship alongside it matters.
