Open Source Software for Startups: Tools That Save You Money
Where a startup can safely adopt open source: CRM, analytics, project management, databases, and chat. Includes the real costs of self-hosting: hosting, maintenance, patching, and staff time.
A Bangalore startup with ten people can run almost its entire internal stack on open source software and cut its software bill by a lot. I say "almost" and "a lot" deliberately, because open source is not free the way people imagine. The license is free. The hosting, patching, and the hours your engineers spend babysitting the stack are not. Let me be concrete about where it saves money and where it quietly costs it.
Start with the obvious wins.
CRM. Odoo Community Edition covers CRM, inventory, invoicing, and accounting in one package. ERPNext is fully open source and popular with Indian SMEs precisely because it handles GST, Tally-style accounting, and inventory out of the box. If you only need basic contact and deal tracking, EspoCRM is lighter and easier to run. Odoo CE is the crowd favourite, but be careful: several features sit behind Odoo Enterprise, so check what you actually need before committing.
Analytics. Matomo is a full Google Analytics replacement you self-host, which keeps visitor data on your own server and out of third-party ad networks. Plausible is the lightweight alternative; its whole selling point is privacy and simplicity. For a startup that cares about consent and India's data protection rules, both solve a problem Google Analytics creates: data leaving your control.
Project management. Plane is the modern open source option, issue tracking and project planning with a clean UI that feels like Linear without the subscription. If your team hates Jira, Plane is a genuine refresh.
Database. PostgreSQL covers nearly every startup use case. Hosted versions like Supabase and Neon remove the ops burden entirely, and self-hosted Postgres is a known quantity. Unless you have a real reason to reach for something else, Postgres is the default.
Communication. Mattermost is the Slack-shaped open source tool you can self-host. For internal chat among ten people, a small Mattermost server on a ₹2,000 a month VPS handles it comfortably. Zulip is the thread-first alternative if your team prefers long-form discussion over a scrolling feed.
Now the honest part: the costs that "free" hides.
Hosting. Every self-hosted service needs a server. Ten tools mean either ten tiny VPSes or one bigger one with containers. A reasonable all-in budget in India is ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 a month for a production-grade setup with backups, depending on how much redundancy you want. That is still far below per-seat SaaS fees, but it is not zero.
Maintenance and security patching. This is the cost nobody budgets for. Someone must update the software when security patches drop. For Mattermost or PostgreSQL that means a monthly habit. For a full ERP like Odoo or ERPNext, upgrades can be genuinely painful: minor versions are fine, major upgrades sometimes break custom modules. If a system holds customer data, patching is not optional, it is compliance.
Staff time. The real price of self-hosting is developer hours. Every hour your one infrastructure person spends on the mail server is an hour not building the product. For a ten-person startup that matters. The rough rule: self-host tools that are boring and stable, databases, internal chat, analytics, and consider hosted versions of things that are complex to run, like a full CRM or ERP. Plausible and Mattermost have paid hosted plans; Odoo has a cloud edition. Using those converts an ops cost into a subscription, and sometimes that trade is worth it.
A concrete example. Say the team needs CRM, analytics, chat, project tracking, and a database. The SaaS bill would be roughly a CRM at ₹3,000 per user a month, Slack at ₹850 per user a month, Jira around the same, plus a hosted database. Total lands around ₹50,000 to ₹70,000 a month. The open source stack, ERPNext or Odoo on a VPS, Matomo, Mattermost, Plane, and Postgres, runs at maybe ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 a month in servers plus half a day a month of one engineer's time for patching and backups. The saving is real, around 80 percent in direct spend. The trade is the ops responsibility, and it is a good trade only if someone on the team is willing to own infrastructure.
The decision rule is simple. Adopt open source where the tool is stable and boring. Avoid it where the tool is complex and central to your product, unless you have a person who enjoys running it. And read the license before you adopt: several projects with open source cores have proprietary edges, which matters if you plan to offer the tool as part of a paid product.
